Trigger Point Release

Trigger points are hyperirritable spots in muscle fibers that are associated with nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. These nodules are small contracted knots which cause pain. Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness or referred pain. With this technique, your therapist will locate these points and use constant pressure to release them.

Muscular overload causes a prolonged release of chemicals in the muscle which results in a sticking of the overloaded muscle cells. This leads to a compression of capillaries and results in an increased local energy demand and local ischemia (loss of blood circulation) to the area. This ''energy crisis'' causes the release of chemicals that augment pain activity. Since an involved muscle is weakened by sustained shortening, surrounding muscles themselves may develop trigger points in a compensatory fashion. This creates a vicious circle of loss of oxygen to muscle cells which produces more toxins, which causes more ischemia which constricts the capillaries (more oxygen loss)… then more toxin release.
